Trump Halts Nearly Completed Wind Farm: Ørsted Caught in the Crossfire

A massive offshore wind project is halted at the last moment—sending shockwaves through the energy industry.

A Political Halt with Global Consequences

Revolution Wind—a major offshore wind project off the coast of Rhode Island—was just months away from completion when the Trump administration pulled the emergency brake. The project, owned by Danish company Ørsted and US-based Global Infrastructure Partners, is 80% built and was scheduled to begin supplying electricity to households in Rhode Island and Connecticut next year.

But now, all work has stopped. In a letter to Ørsted, the US government cited “protection of national security interests” as justification. No further details were given.

A Heavy Blow to Green Energy

Revolution Wind is not alone in being affected. Earlier this year, the administration also temporarily suspended Empire Wind—another offshore project. Additionally, changes to tax policy and trade investigations have made it more difficult to be a green energy investor in the US.

According to Erik Milito from the National Ocean Industries Association, the decision risks having far-reaching consequences: “Any pause or uncertainty at this stage can create a domino effect for jobs, contracts, and local communities that are already benefiting from the project.”

Economic Distrust and Fear of Investor Flight

The message from Washington is causing concern among international investors. The energy company Equinor has previously lost billions due to a similar halt, and Ørsted is now considering legal action.

Jason Grumet, president of the industry association American Clean Power, puts it bluntly: “The unfortunate message to investors is clear: the US is no longer a reliable place for long-term energy investments.”

It remains unclear whether BOEM—the authority behind the stop order—will resume its dialogue with Ørsted. The company itself has stated that it is “evaluating all options, including legal avenues.”

A Scar on America’s Green Legacy

The Trump administration’s decision is seen by many as an ideological battle against green energy. By stopping an almost-finished project, it pulls the rug not only from under Ørsted, but from a broader vision of energy independence and climate neutrality.

And as the world struggles to meet climate goals, the US faces a legacy-defining choice: Will the country be remembered as a green pioneer—or as the nation that put the brakes on renewable power?
