Russian Attack Kills 21 in Kyiv: EU and UK Speak Out
A nighttime missile attack on Ukraine’s capital also struck the EU’s delegation and British Council—prompting a strong response from Europe.
The Deadliest Nighttime Attack in Months
In the early hours of Thursday, Kyiv was hit by one of the most extensive Russian airstrikes since the war began. According to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, at least 21 people were killed—including four children—and 38 wounded, as more than 600 missiles and drones were launched on the capital.
Several residential buildings in the Darnytskyi district were leveled, while missiles also struck near office buildings in the city center.

Diplomatic Buildings in Ruins
For the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion, British government institutions in Kyiv were hit. The British Council suffered significant damage, and the EU delegation’s offices experienced massive destruction from shockwaves.
“Putin’s strikes killed civilians, destroyed homes and damaged our offices. This must stop,” declared UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
Photos show shattered glass façades, collapsed ceilings, and staff forced to work in the ruins. A British Council security guard escaped with minor injuries, described as “shaken but stable.”
Political Shockwave Across Europe
The response from the EU and United Kingdom was swift and severe. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “senseless” and accused Russia of sabotaging hopes for peace. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a new sanctions package against Moscow, which would be the 19th since February 2022.
Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, stressed that the night’s events proved “Moscow has no intention of negotiating peace.”
“Ballistics, Not Negotiation”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used the attack to send a clear message:
“These Russian missiles are a response to all those who have called for a ceasefire and genuine diplomacy. Russia chooses ballistics over the negotiating table.”
His statement touched a sore spot, coming just two weeks after the failed Alaska meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Many European leaders now view Russia’s strategy as a deliberate course of obstruction—a painful sign that a peaceful solution is further away than ever.
